Child Passenger Safety: NTSB Recommendations

On the SWB article New Season Sister Wives Nov 18 2012 - Discussion Page and Some Odds and Ends, there was a discussion concerning the picture of Sol Brown belted into a regular seat on an airliner. I spent some time researching this on the internet and feel that the information I found should be shared with everyone...hopefully the Browns will see this too.

This video is from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) youtube channel and concerns the importance of using proper child restraints while traveling by air.

Here's a link to the longer video that includes motor vehicle travel along with airline travel.

  1. Um this is overkill....who cares how an infant sits on a plane? This is nuts.

    1. Perhaps for you, but I believe this information is important to know.

    2. I figured it was a Public Safety Message from the admins of SWB! no problem.

I just flashed on that old Bill Cosby comedy bit where he talks about "little Jeffrey" on the airplane driving them nuts in first class. LOL. I remember when I was growing up, we all had to DRESS UP to go fly even if it was a red-eye flight! so we were expected to be on our best behavior. I was on a horrendous flight from Miami to SFO where a couple parents allowed their kids to run wild - first they delayed the flight 5 minutes because 2 kids refused to strap into their seats and we couldn't take off until they did. their dad was beyond useless. there was another kid with his fam and once the seatbelt light went off the kids unbuckled and went wild! yikes.

anyway...i just thought of that. back to the SW Marathon! *insert Kody's fatuous voice: "LUUUV should be MULTIPLIED, not DEEvided."*

    3. Keeping an infant/child as safe as humanly possible when traveling is NEVER overkill. As parent, if there is something easy you can do to keep your child safer in any given situation, not doing that is what is nuts.

Thank you Cynical Jinx for posting!

    4. But it seem like a small thing to criticize the browns for...thats what I mean by overkill

    5. No problem, Lisa. I posted this information not to criticize but to inform. Keeping a child safe from possible physical harm can never be considered a 'small thing' nor should it be considered overkill wanting to share information about child safety!

    6. Also on a side note, Robyn posted a picture a while back on Twitter of Solomon sitting forward facing in Kodi's car (he was in a car seat). She then defended herself saying it was ok because he weighed more than 20 lbs even though he was less than a year old. However, a few hours later the picture was removed. The current standard, set by The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children under the age of 2, regardless of weight, be in a rear facing car seat.

    1. Welcome Jillybean and Thank You!

I have 3 more hours to wait...but I'm sure the Browns won't let me down so all's good.

    2. less than 2.5 hours now! and I can't WAIT to read your synopsis CJ!!! Even if the ep sucks. Aw hell - ESPECIALLY if the ep sucks. :)

  3. I am also a long time lurker of this blog and I love it! I do not get why it isn't required that children sit in a child safety seat on a plane. You don't hold your infant in your lap in the car so why on the plane? Yes it's more expensive buying another seat but isn't it worth it knowing your child will be safe in the event of an accident?

Just finished watching the season premiere and as predicted it's a lot of the same old stuff but I am so excited for your review Cynical Jinx!

  4. I can't wait to read and discuss...way to drag out the credit score drama TLC....could you be any more dramatic??

  5. All hell CJ, you might wanna get ur snow shovel out for this episode!!! Ugghhhh!!! Whine & cry me a freakN river, in which Robyn will (eyes rolling)...So over the Brown's BS..smh

  6. The insanity is back! Yay! i am soo looking forward to the review, cuz the opener just seemed to me to be rehash of last season...is it just me or is mariah sortof over the top?my 19 yr old kid woyld probably storm off crying too granted...but only if me, her 40 yr old mom *got* pregnant...lol...

But, ive said it before, no way do they all get those homes. At least, nit without serious tlc intervention...i spend 10 hrs every day underwriting home loans for one of the big bad banks....so my professinal opinion, just from what i see, they r woefully underqualified for traditional, conventional financing. Especially with the new, stricter, lending guides...just my opinion....

    Lookking forward to the review!

  7. Thank you! Im from canada, i love this blog. I was a huge fan of big love and thought this would be facinating. I also work for a lending service and i say shame on any lender for even humoring them. I live on a farm and here we needed 25%down on all. Loans. I hated it at the time because i would have loved a large home with all the fixings but reality ruled supreme cause i knew i had to have that cash up front. What a pain in the ass reality is.

  8. I am not one to defend the Browns, but is it possible they just put him in the seat for the picture? If no other suggestion, I'm willing to give them the benefit of doubt. Whomever took the picture probably had their belt off to take it, so it possibly was prior to take off or during a seat belt off/free to move around.

So many other things to choose from for a post, like Kody saying he looks like a boy toy in their professional pictures!

Sorry, but is that from the premiere episode? I've just started watching it, so please understand that when I posted this short article it was almost 5 hours before the start of the show.

Back on topic, I felt this information was timely, considering the discussion on the previous posting. I've learned a lot from the video, and I'm hoping others can learn from it, too.

  9. Get all four houses or none. Ridiculous. I thought the goal was to reunite them as a family unit. Meri keeps whinning about how someone doesn't think she should have a big house, could that be because you don't need it. Stop playing the victim card that you are being punished for only having one child. Move in with one of the other wives and help parent your bonus children. I know they will never end up with those houses so it's a mute point

  11. In terms of airline safety for infants, despite the recommendations, what you are actually allowed to do depends on the airline. For example, I've taken my 8 month old on American Airlines and they did not even have child restraints to offer. You either had to hold the child in your lap without any restraint or you could sit them in an empty seat next to you with an adult restraint. I didn't like it but there was literally no other option.

On an international airline, I was given a proper child restraint to use. In both cases I was TOLD what to do, not given a choice. Like on the international airline, they checked to make sure I was using the child restraint. So, in this case, Robyn probably didn't have a choice either.

  12. THe other option is to bring your child's car seat with you and install it in the airline seat like millions of parents(including myself) do every time they fly. Of course the airline doesn't provide car seats for all kids, that is the responsibility of the parents.

    1. I'm a responsible parent but I honestly didn't know that was an option. And Ive never seen anyone else do it either though I fly a lot. I always see infants on laps or in baby carriers.

  13. Hello hello, first off I adore your blog, its a perfect mix of sass and class for such a controversial show, I'm always entertained when reading it. While flipping back to your previous posts this one caught my attention. I'm a flight attendant and mother and want to share my piece of infants and children on airplanes.
First off an infant would NEVER be allowed to occupy a seat on an aircraft without the use of a CARES device which are not usually provided by the air carrier and have strict instructions to the age weight and even development of the infant. I.E the child needs to be able to hold their head up and to sit up unassisted by the parent.

Secondly it goes without saying the use of a child restraint device such as a car seat is THE safest way for an infant to travel on an aircraft. However only certain car seats are allowed to be brought on to an aircraft. All you mums and dads go check your childrens car seats for a sticker that says cmvss. This indicates they are airplane approved. It also never hurts to check with the air carrier for their rules and requirements. Brining a carseat onto an aircraft isnt always possible if the aircraft is full the parent has no choice but to hold the infant. Car seats also always have to be placed at a window seat with the parent seated beside the infant.

While holding your infant during flight isnt the safest way for them to travel it is the most cost efficent way to travel and allows mum to breast or bottle feed baby on take off and landing which helps with the pressurization in an infants ears.

I can only conclude Sol was being lap held by Robyn and the image of him in a seat with an adult seat belt on was done purely for the sake of the show capturing a picture of him.

  14. Hard to believe the Browns are that uneducated. I guess they are too busy making sure he is in every shot facing front to learn child safety.
